Australia!

We are so blessed to have the opportunity to travel to the wonderful country of Australia. Our primary purpose in coming is to share at a home school conference. However, we were blessed to take the first few days with David’s Cousin, Luke Waller. He and his three children were a delight to spend time with and we really enjoyed touring “the hills” of Adelaide with them. We were in a beautiful location for rest and reprieve before heading back to Melbourne for the conference.

On our last day before traveling to Melbourne, we celebrated our eleven month anniversary. We were able to spend the day alone together touring the city and enjoying 44 degree Celsius weather. We did not fully realize that was 111 degrees Fahrenheit, but we did our best to stay hydrated and cool.

  1. Yes it get hot here in Australia. Mind you, you came down in one of our worst heat waves! By the way – it’s a ‘snag’ (sausage)

Yes, I guess it was not the best time for the weather. Thanks for the note on the “snag.”

  2. David, I know it’s really petty of me but you did not drive on the “wrong” side of the road, you drove on the opposite side of the road to normal. Driving on the wrong side would mean you drove on the right. I find it very patrionising when Americans & Europeans visit Australia and joke about driving on the wrong side of the road. If you read up on history, you will learn that traditionally everybody drove on the left.

As I said, I know it is petty but we hear it far too often. Look after yourselves in our heat.

  3. Hi David and Priscilla,

I am from Melbourne Australia and love following your inspiring blog and read it all the time! I was very surprised to hear you’ve come all this way to the land down under! Hope you didn’t melt in that 40+ degree heat, it rarely gets THAT hot!! I hope you can put some pictures up of the conference I’d love to see! Although I went to public school my whole life I would definitely consider homeschool when I have my own kids someday. I just don’t hear about it much here, so wonder if there is much community/resource for Australian families to take on the challenge. Do you how many Australian families participate in ATI? It’s great you were able to come and share.

    Safe travels back home!

Thanks for writing! The conference will start tonight and it is conducted here in Lilydale. There are several hundred participants in the conference and it feels like one big family already. You are welcome to stop by for any of our sessions. I will share on Monday morning and on Wednesday. May God bless you!

  4. I hope you were both wearing hats and sunscreen. That heat is not to be messed with, especially you both being very fair. It must be pretty uncomfortable with Priscilla being pregnant too. I was pregnant through a very hot summer heatwave and it wasn’t very nice at all. I understand your need for modesty, however you wearing long shorts and for Priscilla, wearing a loose, cotton/linen blouse rather than the layering which she went for, would have been much more comfortable and sensible in that heat.

BTW, it’s ‘Ute’ not ‘Ut’ 😉

  5. “Ut” is really spelt as “ute” (pronounced you-t)- did you know that it is short for ‘utility van’ and “Flake” is the common term used for “fried shark”?
How did you find driving on the opposite side of the road and other side of the car (right side)?
What was the name of the beach where the ‘out on the coast’ photo was taken?
Have you ever experienced heat like that before, 44 degrees (111 F)?

  6. Hi there! :), Your website is one that I frequent often when all the children go to sleep at night. I’d just like to say, I love it!. Thankyou for giving the web world something good to fill our minds with. Usually, I am not one to comment, but when I saw that you were in Australia, I became a tad excited :)I live in Qld Australia (with a beach and palm trees at my door), I grew up down Adelaide way though and I just wanted to say “I hope you enjoyed your stay!” :).

  7. What a fantastic trip. Thanks for sharing with us. Many blessings on your conference.

  8. I am so glad you had the opportunity to travel to Australia! Your enthusiasm and serving is inspiring!

  9. My name is Jenna and I come from the Blue Mountains, Australia, and I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of months now. I was so excited to see that you have traveled to Australia! Your blog has been such an inspiration to me, and I just want to thank you for all the encouragement that you give. You’ve been here during a big heat wave, so I hope you haven’t completely melted! I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip and have safe travels back to America 🙂

    Thanks again!

  10. I must admit… I’m a tad envious. I have always wanted to cuddle a wallaby and pet a kangaroo! I was glad to see that you went a little early to spend some time with your family and have some fun! I lived in Phoenix, Arizona for a few years and the summers often saw temps of 120 degrees or more, but no humidity. I hope the 111 degree days with moderate humidity weren’t too tough on you! Hope your time was fun AND fruitful!!

  11. Wow! I’m so glad you got to visit our country! And that you were in Lilydale of all places, just down the road from me! I hope you had lots of fun. Isn’t it strange driving on the wrong side of the road? I visited America a while ago and I kept thinking we were going to crash lol. Took me a while to get used to it 🙂
Thanks for supporting the homeschooling movement in Oz, will be great to see this continue to grow.
